Cabrillo Boat Shop was originally established in 1958 as Hanchette Boat Shop at Berth 41 in San Pedro. It became what we know as Cabrillo Boat Shop in 1962.
Owned by the Holland Family since 1977, Cabrillo Boat Shop was not part of the final redevelopment plan for the current San Pedro waterfront. By 1997, it therefore, moved to its current location in Long Beach at 1500 Pier C Street. After three generations, the last of the classic DIY (do-it-yourself) yards, Cabrillo Boat Shop closed in 2018.
In February 2020, Cabrillo Boat Shop re-opened under new ownership. It is again a family-run business. The new owner, Chris Messano, is providing family-run boatyard services to the boating community and preserving the history of small repair yards. As a kid in the early 1970’s, Chris would take his dinghy from California Yacht Anchorage to Cabrillo Boat Shop and wander around, admiring all the boats and operations. With his fond memories of the old Cabrillo Boat Shop, he opted to keep the name and give the crane and shop the mint green colors he remembers as a kid.
Cabrillo Boat Shop has made major capital improvements including an expanded footprint, increased types of services offered, new equipment, a newly negotiated waterway access. In addition, the original crew who had worked together for years prior to its closing have returned.
Cabrillo Boat Shop is back on the map!
